Texas Instruments
France introduced in 2014 with the TI-82 Plus the successor of the
TI-82 Stats.fr sporting the housing of the
20th-Century TI-83 Plus. Missing the Press-to-Test
feature with a graphing calculator for the 2014-2015 school year was slightly
short sighted, the TI-82 Plus was already discontinued in 2015 and replaced with
the TI-82 Advanced based on the TI-84 Plus. Don't
miss the TI-83 Plus.fr introduced in 2013 and based on the
TI-84 Plus Silver Edition.
Dismantling
this TI-82 Plus manufactured in February 2014 by
Kinpo electronics, Inc. reveals
a very familiar looking design and reminds us with its chip-on-board ASIC about
the TI-83 Plus manufactured in April 2007 by Nam
Tai Electronics, Inc..
Please notice the two LR44 backup batteries, previous TI-83 Plus
calculators made use of one CR1620 battery.
The
picture on the right gives an enhanced view of the ASIC that clocks the internal Z80
microprocessor with 6 MHz and incorporates the 32k Bytes RAM and some supporting
logic. Learn more about the Hardware Architecture of TI’s Graphing Calculators. The ASIC makes use of chip-on-board technology and without destroying the
calculator we can't tell the manufacturer. We assume that Nam Tai uses the
"TI REF TI-738X (220C080FG102)" silicon for the chip-on-board assembly.
The
operating system of the calculator is stored in a 512k Bytes Flash ROM, this
units sports a Macronix MX29LV400
chip
in a traditional package.
Working
through the menus of the TI-82 Plus starts with a big surprise - the operating
system is 100% identical with the TI-83 Plus.fr
introduced in June 2008 and even reports a "TI-83 Plus" message!
